ARMADILLO

The feature-length documentary film “Armadillo”, by Janus Metz and cinematography by Lars Skree is selected for Semaine de la Critique, the distinguished side programme, which seldom includes documentary among its repertoire. ARMADILLO is an upfront account of growing cynicism and adrenaline addiction for young soldiers at war.

Mads and Daniel are on their first mission in Helmand, Afghanistan. Their platoon is stationed in Camp Armadillo, right on the Helmand frontline, fighting tough battles against the Taliban.

The soldiers are there to help the Afghan people, but as fighting gets tougher and operations increasingly hairy, Mads, Daniel and their friends become cynical, widening the gap between themselves and the Afghan civilisation Mistrust and paranoia set in causing alienation and disillusion.

Armadillo is a journey into the soldier’s mind and a unique film on the mythological story of man and war, staged in its contemporary version in Afghanistan. Having been awarded for Semaine de la Critique, Janus Metz is now also a contender for the prestigious Camera d’Or, Cannes Film Festival’s award for best debuting feature film.

Reviews

Varity

Shot on a mixture of digital formats (including Red, Canon D5 and DVD Pro HD cameras, per press notes), widescreen lensing credited to Lars Skree has both grit and, in quieter moments, painterly thoughtfulness.

Screen Daily

Unsensational and strikingly shot by Lars Skree, Armadillo is both absorbing and thought-provoking; qualities that make it a significant addition to the documentaries on the war on terror.”

BODIL AWARDS 2011 ARMADILLO BEST DOP

Best Photographer – Lars Skree It has never happened before that Bodil for Best Photographer is awarded for a documentary. But it has probably not happened many times before that a photographer is set to take pictures under such difficult conditions as Lars Skree in ‘Armadillo’.

With a camera on his shoulder, Skree went into the field and came home with a strip of images from Afghanistan, which at once shows the horrors of war and peace and which at the same time tells an important story. Having one eye on what happened around him and the other eye free to think about the film’s expression is a difficult task performed by a master in total balance.

The Guardian

Photographed with an astonishing mixture of lyricism, acute observation and gut-wrenching immediacy by Lars Skree.”

BODIL AWARDS Best Documentary

Best Documentary – Armadillo! We are immensely impressed with ‘Armadillo’, and it’s not just because Janus Metz has created a solid, visually breathtaking and entertaining film on harsh terms.

It is also an extremely sober documentary about young Danish men who slowly but surely on the often meaningless patrols in Afghanistan’s Helmand province, become warriors, and may, perhaps not, liquidate wounded Taliban. ‘Armadillo’ is an unusually underplayed war film, and not least because of that, the film becomes an unflinching testimony to Denmark’s national loss of innocence.
