The Bodil Awards are the major Danish film awards given by Denmark's National Association of Film Critics (Danish: Filmedarbejderforeningen). The awards are presented annually at a ceremony in theImperial Cinema in Copenhagen. Established in 1948, it is one of the oldest film awards in Europe. The awards are given without regard to commercial interests or box-office sales, but rather to highlight the films or actors that the critics regard as most worthy.

Armadillo

Premiere Cannes 2010.

The feature-length documentary film "Armadillo", by Janus Metz and cinematography by Lars Skree is selected for Semaine de la Critique, the distinguished side programme, which seldom includes documentary among its repertoire.

"Armadillo" is the story of two young men, Mads and Daniel, who, thirsty for adventure and with open minds, leave Denmark on their first mission to Afghanistan, a war which annihilates the innocence they once beheld. The film is a journey into the minds of the soldiers and an examination of the reality of war. A character-driven, psychological drama, "Armadillo" examines how politics function in practice, when the international community's efforts at democratization and development stand face-to-face with war on a micro-level in the midst of the complexity and extreme conditions of Afghanistan.

With death as result

For the first time in Danish history the Danish judicial system has allowed an entire case to be filmed. The case concerns a man who killed his best friend with a Samurai sword – was it an accident or was it a deliberate act when the defendant wielded the sword? It is an emotionally charged case where much is at stake for the defendant, who has to re-experience the tragic night when his friend died, and who must also try to pull through a trial in which he faces a severe prison sentence.

Feature MAX PINLIG / MAX EMBARRASSING II

An amusing coming of age tale from Lotte Svendsen's Max-universe. Now 14, Max is about to decide on an internship and is finding it difficult to choose. He settles, against his mother's wishes, for a bank internship. But mother Agnethe, still quite embarrassing, takes action and enrols Max in a free spirited camp for the sake of his soul's salvation. Meanwhile his lovelife is hanging by a thread; Esther seems less and less interested in him even though he is making an effort to win her over.

The Max universe is based on a perpetual idea that children are afraid to appear embarrassed as they evolve into maturity. Likewise, it seems that their parents also become embarrassed when they make attempts to protect their children or express their love for them.

Baby is an adaptation of Danish writer Kirsten Thorup's award-winning first novel. It is the gripping tale of rootless young urbanites and their desperate struggle to find and understand love. Their hunt for love, sex and money evoke moving, provocative scenes.
The cast is made up of some of the best actors in Denmark (Ulrich Thomsen: The Celebration; Jesper Christensen: The Bench, Minor Mishaps; Maria Rich: Minor Mishaps) and the legendary rock band Sort Sol - to create an uncompromising, raw, poetic film that simultaneously charms and shocks. Cinematographer Lars Skree – Tough Guy and a Poet

Lars Skree put his life on the line while filming "Armadillo", and he is also credited on IDFA competitor Blood in the Mobile. Winning several awards, director of photography Lars Skree has a keen eye for both detail and the broader picture.

"Lars Skree has a unique ability to live in the moment – listening and observing intensely," said the committee behind the Roos Award 2010, an award that honours outstanding achievements in Danish documentary filmmaking.

"He masters effortlessly the 'staged' and 'real' setting within documentary, as well as poetic reflection and raw drama," the comittee continued in its motivation. "He is willing to go to great lengths to bring back his images. He has a 7th sense when it comes to what is about to happen, and he knows when to let the camera roll."

Lars Skree graduated as director of photography from the National Film School of Denmark in 1997. He has received awards for his work on films such as "The Swenkas" (by Jeppe Rønde), "Love on Delivery", "Ticket to Paradise" and "Armadillo" (all by Janus Metz). Lars Skree is also credited on "Blood in the Mobile" (by Frank Piasecki Poulsen), selected for IDFA's Feature-length Competition.

Skree spent six months on the front lines in Afghanistan's Helmand province shooting "Armadillo". The project took him through all the dilemmas and choices of working in a war zone. For instance in a scene depicting dead Taleban soldiers.

"Of course I had mixed feelings as I stood there filming the dead bodies. 'Is it really necessary to film this?' But I had to stay professional and say 'We'll make that decision later.' You can't decide something like that when you're under pressure from all sides (… ) To see this person who was breathing only 30 seconds ago, lying there in a pool of blood, off course that was tough. When I see that image today, I turn my head away."

"For me "Armadillo" is a very poetic and philosophical film. I was determined to be open and avoid too many prejudices and try to get a poetic quality into something that is so horrifying."

Lars Skree is quoted from an interview by Louise Kidde Sauntved in the Danish daily Urban, May 2010
